Before beginning any surface preparation, it is important to ensure that all loose scale, rust, and other foreign matter is removed. This can be done in accordance with SSPC SP2 “Hand Tool Cleaning” or SP3 “Power Tool Cleaning”, both of which provide guidelines for effective cleaning.
Another suitable method of preparation is a high pressure water wash, which should be conducted at 3,000 - 7,000 psi (20.68 - 48.26 MPa).
Once the surface is properly cleaned, it is important to apply a thin film of petroleum paste before beginning the wrapping process. The tape should be spirally wrapped with a 55% overlap, ensuring that air pockets are pressed out and all lap seams are smoothed.
For irregular surfaces such as valves and flanges, Petroleum Filler Mastic or Profiling Mastic may be required. PVC Tape is applied as an outerwrap for mechanical protection. Additional information about the application and selection of these specific products can be found on their product sheets.
